Stephen L. Cox, MD

Specializing in Lower Extremity/Foot & Ankle, Foot & Ankle Trauma, Total Ankle Replacement & General Orthopedics

Stephen Cox, MD joined Orthopedic Specialists of Louisiana in August of 2005 and since that time has been the area’s leader in total ankle replacement and total ankle fusion.

If you asked Dr. Cox’s parents what he wanted to be when he was young, they would have said a Dallas Cowboy or doctor. Although a collegiate football player, at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, Cox ultimately was driven towards medicine. After medical school and an orthopedic residency at LSU Health-Shreveport, Dr. Cox completed a lower extremity/foot & ankle trauma fellowship at Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Cox believes that when caring for his patients, it is important that he and his patient communicate openly and can be on the same page when creating a patient’s treatment plan. He wants his patients to understand what their options are so that they may make an informed decision. Cox says, “I really let may patient’s direct a lot of what’s going to happen. They’re the captain of the ship and I’m the navigator. I tell them ways we can get there, and they ultimately make the decisions of what’s best for them to get to that result.”

Born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dr. Cox played football at Captain Shreve High School. Cox can still be found on the Gator sideline, as well as the Loyola Flyers sideline as a standby doc/coach and full-time dad to his sons, Carter, and Trevor. His wife, Neal is a fitness instructor and Cox credits her for keeping him in shape and headed in the right direction. The Cox Family are very community minded. They are active in Young Life and Volunteers of America. Cox says, “My wife and I try to vary the things we are doing in the community based on where we can help the most and where our kids take us.” When time allows, Cox enjoys deer hunting and fishing.
